Review of 'A Lyrical Trail & Other Poems' By Anwesha Bhattacharya

An anthology of poems written from the heart and soul of the poetess.  This book is the most candid collection I have come across in a long time.

True to its title, the book is a lyrical ballad of emotions with topical poems covering themes like nature, divinity, life experiences, candid confessions, love messages and a lot more. Unlike other poetry books, which I have mostly seen are written around either one or a few more topics, this book takes you deeper into the psyche of the author with various topical poems, and you witness her obvious creative side, better. For example, I loved the piece written by her, ‘I am the artist of my own life’. The poet says,

I chose to be my own muse,

Where I am the sculptor of my own masterpiece

I take the liberty to carve my identity…

Her flowing words, simple yet rhythmic narration in verses, reminded me of William Wordsworth, who was also known for his lyrical style of writing. However, considering postmodernism and contemporary times, where poets mostly prefer to write in free verse, writing lyrically is a great way of reaching the readers who are new to poetry or still think poetry doesn’t touch their hearts. This book will surely do.

As I have mentioned already, the writing style is with easy-flowing words; this poem will surely touch your heart. Particularly in these times, when the world seems to be becoming hollow and devoid of emotions.

Hope is the bird that sings

When the dawn is still dark

Hope is the fire that lingers

Long after love loses its spark…

To sum up, I would say that the poems are the poet’s heart’s soulful reflection and the truthfulness of her as a human being. She believes in the cosmos, the omnipresent in the universe, and her faith in it. She loves nature, her bond with her beloved grows stronger, and she faces the highs and lows that every romantic experiences in love. She shares some of her childhood days and her worries about a war-torn world, too.  Significantly, the coming together of it all in one book is this lyrical odyssey. There are sixty poems in the collection, which I recommend you devour slowly, one poem a day. Let its soul settle into yours before you move on to the other. Enjoy the musical mysticism through the words of the poet Anwesha Bhattacharya, as she has crafted a book that can be enjoyed under the warmth of the sun with a cup of warm coffee!
